This year, Spay the Strays will be trying out a new technique. In addition to our one large event in which we neuter around 200 animals in one weekend, we will be doing several small clinics in the more remote villages. The animal owners in these villages have no access to vet services and they live too far away to transport to one of our more urban, large events. Our first “mini” Spay the Strays Day will be held on Sunday, January 18th in the village of Copecito, located 8 kilometers off the main highway on the road toward El Valle. For this event, we will have one vet and our goal will be to neuter approximately 40 dogs and cats.
The one thing that hasn’t changed is our need for support! Without you, we couldn’t hold any events – big or small. You can help by donating time, money, and/or materials. We will need two big bags of dog food, two cases of water, a package of 8 rolls of paper towels, and rubber gloves in small, med, and large. If you are willing to purchase any of these items, please confirm that with Sheila or me for coordination (contact info is below). We can also always use lots of dog and cat crates, which will be borrowed and cleaned before returning.
With only one vet, these “mini” events should be much less hectic and strenuous. There will be two shifts of eight volunteers– morning (probably 8 to 12:30) and afternoon (12:30 to 5:00). We will need people for registration, pre-op, post-op, vet assistant, instrument cleaning, carrying animals to and from the operating table, aftercare instructions, and drivers for pets and owners (directions and times are given out and pets are in crates). In March we will hold our major Spay the Strays Day. Right now, we are looking at locations in Punta Barco/San Jose. This year, we will also be holding a “mini” in Sora and in Llano Grande or Bajo del Rio (both of these are on the road to Altos del Maria). If you can’t help out at the January event, stay tuned for information on future ones!
