Got a couple free hours on Saturday? Come JOIN THE FUN! Finca La Maya offers free courses to families in our communities, and we NEED volunteers! Easy and fun, it’s only two hours on Saturdays to help us to help others. Only requirement: a set of hands and eyes and a willingness to assist! Finca La Maya’s goal is to enhance education and cultural opportunities for local Panamanians. Most primary schools in Panama’s small, poorer “interior” (rural) communities cannot afford to hire teachers or provide materials for English or art instruction in their classrooms. La Maya was opened to the public in January of 2007. As our way of “giving back” to our community, we offer free classes every Saturday: English language classes (for all ages) 9:30 – noon, “Art for Kids”, and a computer skills workshop, 1 – 3 pm.
With new luxury resort communities developing at a staggering rate, the local residents’ world is already changing profoundly. Learning English can equip them with better employment possibilities, enriched lives, and help them afford a better standard of living for their families. During La Maya’s past six years the number of students has grown steadily. New students appear every month. Up to one hundred participants have attended the weekly community programs at La Maya, coming from communities all along Panama’s Pacific coast. There are fantastic success stories: our students’ applications are being accepted to universities because of their progress in La Maya’s English classes and some are applying for international exchange scholarships. Local expats are learning Spanish too!
The number and quality of our programs at La Maya is dependent on the talents and generosity of our supporters. Friends, sponsors, and local residents have donated their time, teaching materials and art supplies. Volunteers provide instruction. La Maya hopes that anyone who has a few hours in their week will come give us a hand: teach a child to write their name, pass out cookies, serve lemonade. It all helps and we need it, now. Please contact Starr McCamant at La Maya directly for details or … just show up! YOU can make a difference! Support our community by offering knowledge and the chance of a better future. Childrens’ lives are being changed by our programs.
