toll booth panamaStarting September 2012, tolls payments on the South Corridor will be made only with the 'Surexpress' card. According to Rigoberto Effio, National Highway Company Administrator (ENA) the measure seeks to reduce long lines at the toll booths during rush hour.  Effio says the electronic payment system will reduce the wait time by half. Currently, the sur express cards can be bought at Corredor Sur Delta Gas Station for $5 and can be recharged at the toll booths. ENA will also be setting up 300 recharge points in major super markets in Panama city. For more information you can call 260-0433 ext. 2319 or 2320.

OK, let me get this straight. You can buy the Surexpress card at the Corredor Sur Delta Gas Station which is inside the toll plaza? You can recharge the cards at the toll booths? Since the toll booths will only accept the cards, will there be anyone in the toll booth? Have you ever waited for someone to recharge their cards? That is a bigger pain then waiting for them to make change. And what about dumb tourist leaving the airport and not knowing about the card only requirement? More disorganized chaos in Panama.

I think the so called disorganized chaos is a great alternative to the way Canadians are now forced to live in Canada. We are regulated to death so for now enjoy the chaos.

What happens if you don't have the card? If you are just happening to travel that way?. How do you get back (off) the highway? Wow !

You can still buy the card at the booth, the cost is $5 for the card and then you put money on it.

After Sept 1 2012, Corredor Sur will accept EITHER the SURexpress sticker, or the tarjeta, but they will no longer accept cash.
The sticker goes on the windshield and allows you to drive straight through special lanes that "read" your sticker and charge your credit card. You can get this sticker at the Delta station at the Hippodrome exit. It costs $15 and they take all your credit card info and have you sign several papers.

The other alternative is the tarjeta which is similar to a credit card and has been available for a long time. You can purchase it right at the toll booth and recharge it there when it is out of money.
Yes, there will be real people at the booths to sell and re-charge these cards.
